Our students report that singing helps them in their daily work in a variety of ways: ![]() Singing and vocal work is universally recognised as a healthy way to release tension, focus the mind and soothe the soul. There have been numerous studies undertaken which consistently prove the health benefits of singing. Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, who has studied developmental and medical aspects of singing for 30 years says, “The health benefits of singing are both physical and psychological. Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being. Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour.” A Happier more engaged workforce? YES! Companies are constantly on the look out for ways to improve their quality of life for employees, and meet with their corporate responsibility objectives. If people can feel good at work, it’s simply of great benefit to all concerned. Having well established employee engagement within a company is crucial. Gallup Management Statistics from 2008 proved that engaged employees have:
Frequently colleagues in a large companies are limited in ways to interact socially with one another, especially if they work in different departments or on different floors. Having an activity such as singing to bring them all together raises energy levels and creates greater harmony all round. The Guardian recently published an article in praise of singing in the workplace which stated: “There is evidence that singing in groups releases pheromones, creating a buzz that is anecdotally familiar to any lunchtime chorister. Then there is the satisfaction of meeting up with your colleagues for an activity more creative than a gossip over the watercooler. The high drop-out rate among aspiring musicians means that the geek in accounts may well turn out once to have been a choral scholar or lead vocalist in a band. So both socially and physically the benefits are clear, but ultimately singing is a performance art. As anyone who has ever done it will vouch, there is nothing quite so life-affirming, so out-of-the box exhilarating, as knowing that you have hit the top of your form in front of an appreciative audience.” Voxbox Vocal Arts Ltd 164 Eversholt St London NW1 1BL |
